On March 13, 2013, the Portland City Council unanimously passed a paid sick time bill that will benefit more than 121,000 workers in the city. Under the Portland bill, workers in businesses with more than 5 employees will be eligible to earn up to 5 paid sick days a year for personal or family health needs, and workers in smaller businesses will be eligible to earn up to 5 unpaid sick days a year. The law also allows workers to use their paid time off to address certain needs if the worker or a worker’s minor child or dependent is the victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking.
A Better Balance staff helped to draft this bill, and we provided extensive legal support to the campaign at every stage of the legislative process. We’re thrilled with the momentum that has been generated by the city’s unanimous vote!
Portland’s paid sick time law will go into effect on January 1, 2014. Meanwhile, advocates are working to pass a statewide paid sick time law in Oregon.
